Journal Prompt 3

The installation of a new pope

Fox News Network, LLC. (2025). Pope Leo XIV. Fox News. https://www.foxnews.com/category/person/pope-leo-xiv

What format is used to tell this story? (radio, podcast, television, photo essay, written)

This source is written.

Does this format work for the story? Why or why not?

This format does work; however, it lacks some of the depth needed to tell the story of the Pope's installation. The intended audience leans right and is nationalist, which explains the use of nationalistic speech for an American pope. However, many of the pope’s followers are catholic and desire to understand the tradition and the spiritual considerations that take place in the choosing of the pope. This written piece lacks the detail needed for that audience, both through the writing and the visuals.

If it does not work in this format, what would it have needed? Is that possible in this Format?

Since this is a legacy television company, they would have done better to explain the process a little more with more engaging visuals of the decision, such as the smoke pouring out of the Vatican, and more personable photos of this new pope. If they are trying to reach a more America-centered audience, they could have provided photography of this pope before the election, along with other more engaging visuals. Since this story was reported on television, they could have also included video visuals either directly from the Vatican or from the coverage of the moment.

Does this format work for the story? Why or why not?

This format does work well for its audience. While it could be a little more engaging, as it only features image visuals, I believe that this utilizes Catholic language and tradition to engage the more religious audience.

If it does not work in this format, what would it have needed? Is that possible in this Format?

This comes from a conference of Catholic Bishops, meaning that the tradition and process of this story have been carefully executed by whoever wrote this. In their imagery, they show more of the traditional and spiritual elements of the induction of the new pope, showing the crowds of bishops in attendance and the significance of the robes and adornments. I do believe, however, that some sort of video or audio recording of the speeches or the ceremonies would move this audience and bring them to the spiritual experience for all senses.

This source was a television show that was then shortened and posted to YouTube

Does this format work for the story? Why or why not?

This format does work well for its audience. They use discussion, visuals, and thorough explanations of the event to engage their curious and intelligent audience. They showed videos of the Pope being inducted while addressing both the spiritual and personal elements of the ceremony and the individual.

Overall, the video and visual elements worked best for this story. Having videos that allow audiences to see exactly what took place, along with a detailed explanation behind it, informs the audience without leaving too many unanswered questions. With the plain written and photographic visuals, a lot is left out, and the audience can often feel distracted and confused by what is in front of them. However, in the video example I chose, they addressed this ceremony in an approachable way for all viewers, believing and non-believing, to take in and respect. By focusing on the event itself, it is more straightforward and prevents confusion or room for opinion.
